Understanding MHW Damage Calculation

Monster Hunter: World’s damage calculation can be complex. This calculator simplifies it for average raw physical damage per hit. Here are the key components:

  • True Raw: The weapon’s base attack power, divided by its class multiplier (e.g., Great Sword is 4.8, Long Sword is 3.3). This calculator expects the *true* raw value.
  • Bonus Raw: Additional flat attack gained from skills (Attack Boost, Agitator, Peak Performance), items (Might Seed, Demon Powder), and canteen buffs.
  • Displayed Raw: True Raw + Bonus Raw. This is the attack value you typically see in your status screen.
  • Sharpness Modifier: Each sharpness level (Purple, White, Blue, etc.) provides a multiplier to your raw damage.
  • Affinity & Critical Boost:
    • Affinity is your critical hit chance. A positive affinity means a chance to deal bonus damage; negative means a chance to deal reduced damage (feeble hit).
    • By default, a critical hit deals 125% damage (a 0.25 multiplier on top of base).
    • Critical Boost skill increases this critical damage multiplier (Level 1: 130%, Level 2: 135%, Level 3: 140%).
  • Effective Raw (eRaw): This is your Displayed Raw, augmented by your Sharpness Modifier and the average damage increase from your Affinity and Critical Boost. It’s a measure of your potential raw power before considering the specific attack or monster part.
    eRaw = Displayed Raw * Sharpness * (1 + (Affinity % * Critical Damage Bonus))
  • Motion Value (MV): Each attack in a weapon’s moveset has a specific MV, which is a percentage of your eRaw that attack will use. Stronger attacks have higher MVs.
  • Hitzone Value (HZV): Each monster part has a HZV, representing its weakness to physical damage. Higher HZVs mean the part takes more damage. This is also a percentage.

Average Damage = eRaw * (MV / 100) * (HZV / 100)

This calculator does not account for elemental damage, status effects, monster defense modifiers (often a global quest modifier, but simplified here), or specific conditional skills not covered by “Bonus Raw”. It provides a good estimate for comparing raw-focused builds and understanding damage mechanics.
