Enter your serum albumin and ascitic fluid albumin levels into the calculator to determine your SAAG value.

SAAG Calculation Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the SAAG value.

SAAG = Serum Albumin - Ascitic Fluid Albumin

Variables:

  • SAAG is the Serum-Ascites Albumin Gradient (g/dL)
  • Serum Albumin is the albumin level in the blood (g/dL)
  • Ascitic Fluid Albumin is the albumin level in the ascitic fluid (g/dL)

To calculate the SAAG, subtract the ascitic fluid albumin from the serum albumin.

What is SAAG Calculation?

SAAG calculation refers to the process of determining the gradient between the serum albumin level and the ascitic fluid albumin level. This calculation helps in diagnosing the cause of ascites, differentiating between portal hypertension-related ascites and other causes. A high SAAG (≥ 1.1 g/dL) suggests portal hypertension, whereas a low SAAG (< 1.1 g/dL) indicates non-portal hypertension-related causes.

How to Calculate SAAG?

The following steps outline how to calculate the SAAG using the given formula.

  1. First, determine your serum albumin level.
  2. Next, determine your ascitic fluid albumin level.
  3. Use the formula from above: SAAG = Serum Albumin – Ascitic Fluid Albumin.
  4. Finally, calculate the SAAG by plugging in the values.
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
