Bat Mitzvah Date & Parashah Calculator
Discover the Gregorian date of the 12th Hebrew birthday and the corresponding weekly Torah portion (Parashat HaShavua). This milestone marks a significant step in Jewish life.
Understanding Your Bat Mitzvah Date
A girl traditionally becomes a Bat Mitzvah on her 12th birthday according to the Hebrew calendar. Since the Hebrew day begins at sunset, if the birth occurred after sunset on a particular Gregorian date, the Hebrew birthday falls on the following Hebrew day.
This calculator determines this significant date and also identifies the Parashat HaShavua (weekly Torah portion) that will be read in synagogue on the Shabbat associated with the Bat Mitzvah date. This portion often becomes a central theme for the Bat Mitzvah’s D’var Torah (speech).
How it Works:
- Gregorian to Hebrew: Your civil birth date is converted to its Hebrew calendar equivalent. The “after sunset” option adjusts this if necessary.
- Adding 12 Years: Twelve years are added to the Hebrew birth date.
- Hebrew to Gregorian: The resulting 12th Hebrew birthday is converted back to the Gregorian calendar date.
- Parashah Identification: The calculator finds the Torah portion for the Shabbat of the week of the 12th Hebrew birthday.
