Understanding Your Salvadoran Salary Calculation
Calculating your take-home pay in El Salvador involves subtracting several mandatory deductions from your gross income. Here’s a general overview:
- Gross Income: This is your total earnings before any deductions. It includes your basic salary, plus any bonuses or other taxable income.
- ISSS (Instituto Salvadoreño del Seguro Social): This is the social security contribution, primarily for health coverage.
- Employee contribution: Typically 3% of your salary, capped at a maximum salary of $1,000. So, the maximum ISSS employee deduction is $30.
- AFP (Administradoras de Fondos de Pensiones): This is your contribution to a private pension fund.
- Employee contribution: Typically 4.25% of your salary. There is also a salary cap for AFP contributions (e.g., around $7,045.06 for AFP Confía/Crecer in recent years, though this specific cap is not strictly enforced in this calculator for simplicity beyond a general high threshold).
- Taxable Income: This is calculated as: Gross Income – ISSS Deduction – AFP Deduction.
- ISR (Impuesto Sobre la Renta): Income tax is levied on your taxable income according to progressive tax brackets. For monthly salaried employees, common brackets are (verify with official sources):
- $0.01 to $472.00: Exempt (0% tax)
- $472.01 to $895.24: 10% on the amount exceeding $472.00, plus a fixed fee of $17.67
- $895.25 to $2038.10: 20% on the amount exceeding $895.24, plus a fixed fee of $60.00
- $2038.11 and above: 30% on the amount exceeding $2038.10, plus a fixed fee of $288.57
- Net Salary (Take-Home Pay): Gross Income – ISSS Deduction – AFP Deduction – ISR Deduction.
Important: The percentages, caps, and tax brackets mentioned are common figures but can be subject to change by Salvadoran law. Always refer to official publications from the Ministry of Finance (Ministerio de Hacienda), ISSS, and your AFP for the most current and precise information.
