Understanding Chicken Feed Needs

A chicken’s daily feed intake can vary based on several factors including:

  • Breed: Larger breeds generally eat more than smaller bantam breeds.
  • Age: Chicks, growers, and laying hens have different nutritional and quantity requirements.
    • Chicks (0-8 weeks): Typically eat starter crumbles, ad libitum (as much as they want).
    • Growers (8-18/20 weeks): Eat grower feed. Consumption increases as they grow.
    • Layers (18/20+ weeks): Eat layer feed. An average is 1/4 pound (approx. 110-120 grams) per day.
  • Season/Weather: Chickens may eat more in cold weather to maintain body temperature and potentially less in very hot weather.
  • Access to Forage: If chickens free-range and have access to pasture, bugs, and kitchen scraps (ensure they are safe!), their consumption of commercial feed may decrease.
  • Feed Quality & Type: Pellets, crumbles, or mash can affect consumption and waste. Higher quality feed might be consumed in slightly lesser amounts due to better nutrient density.

This calculator provides an estimate. Always monitor your flock’s condition and adjust feeding as necessary. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available, as it’s crucial for digestion and overall health.
