Enter your patent filing date, grant date, and any term adjustments into the calculator to determine the remaining patent life.
Patent Life Calculation Formula
The following formula is used to calculate the remaining life of a patent:
Remaining Life = Base Life - (Current Date - Grant Date) + (Term Adjustment / 365)
Variables:
- Remaining Life is the remaining duration of the patent (years)
- Base Life is the standard duration of a patent (20 years)
- Current Date is today’s date
- Grant Date is the date the patent was granted
- Term Adjustment is the adjustment in days for patent term extensions
To calculate the remaining patent life, subtract the time passed since the grant date from the base life, and then add any term adjustments divided by 365 to convert to years.
