Understanding Sashing Calculations

Sashing refers to the strips of fabric sewn between quilt blocks, and often around the outer edge of the assembled blocks, to frame them and add to the quilt’s overall design and size. This calculator helps you figure out how much fabric you’ll need for this sashing.

How this calculator works:

  • Finished Sizes: Enter the dimensions your blocks and sashing will be *after* all seams are sewn. The calculator will add seam allowances for cutting.
  • Block Layout: Specify how many blocks are in each row (across) and each column (down).
  • Fabric Width (WOF): This is the usable width of your sashing fabric, typically 40-44 inches.
  • Seam Allowance: The amount added to each side of a fabric piece for sewing, commonly 1/4 inch (0.25 inches).

The calculator determines the total length of sashing material needed. It assumes a common construction method where vertical sashing strips are added first, running the full height of the block columns (including any horizontal sashing *between* blocks in that column). Then, horizontal sashing strips are added, running the full width of the quilt (including the blocks and the newly added vertical sashing). Finally, it calculates how many strips you’ll need to cut from your WOF and the total yardage required.

This tool provides an estimate. Always consider buying a little extra fabric to account for squaring up, cutting errors, or pre-washing shrinkage.
