Understanding Stableford Scoring
Stableford is a popular golf scoring system where points are awarded based on your score relative to par on each hole, adjusted for your handicap. Unlike stroke play, a very bad hole doesn’t ruin your entire round, as the worst score you can get on a hole is zero points (a “wipe”). This generally leads to faster play and a more enjoyable game for many golfers.
How Handicap Strokes Work
Your Course Handicap determines how many strokes you ‘receive’ during the round. These strokes are distributed according to the Stroke Index (SI) of each hole:
- The Stroke Index ranks holes from 1 (hardest) to 18 (easiest) on the course.
- If your handicap is 10, you get one stroke on holes with SI 1 through 10.
- If your handicap is 22, you get one stroke on all 18 holes, plus an additional stroke on holes with SI 1 through 4 (22 – 18 = 4).
Your Net Score for a hole is your Gross Score minus any handicap strokes received on that hole.
Points System
Points are awarded based on your Net Score relative to Par:
- More than 1 over Net Par (e.g., Net Double Bogey or worse): 0 points
- One over Net Par (Net Bogey): 1 point
- Net Par: 2 points
- One under Net Par (Net Birdie): 3 points
- Two under Net Par (Net Eagle): 4 points
- Three under Net Par (Net Albatross/Double Eagle): 5 points
The player with the highest total points at the end of the round wins.
